1-28-14 Bird Brains?

In the early 1970’s there was a lot of talk about global cooling and slipping into a little ice age (do a search on the 70’s Global cooling or little ice age). Then along came the harsh winters of 76-77 and 77-78 which seemed to confirm mans thinking to some. One poor truck driver was stranded in a truck for six days by Mansfield (http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/w/1978_Ohio_Statewide_Blizzard?rec=1649) because the snow drifts were so deep they covered his truck, which I think was a semi. He lost track of what day it was but after six days, he dug upwards to the surface from his window. This really struck me as I was on the road a lot all around all of the Great Lakes, except Lake Superior, in the winter and I had driven past the site while he was buried under all that snow and I did not see the truck.
One of those severe winters found me up on an Alleghany mountain ridge deer hunting. It was so cold, I built a small fire in some rocks at the base of a tree. I was amazed when this Great White (also called a Snowy or Arctic) Owl landed in the tree about fifteen feet above the fire and stayed for hours. When the smoke would drift up to him, he would turn his head and close his eyes! This magnificent bird was completely unafraid of me. That year the news told how these big owls had come south from their normal home in the Canadian arctic to find warmer weather.
For years I have mentioned my concern that we might have to suffer through severe cold so the Lord can prove the global warming people wrong. If I remember correctly, back in the seventies, pollution caused global cooling unlike now when pollution causes global warming! One site explained this reversal on they didn’t understand their data back in those days but in these days of faked data the opposite conclusion is more easily justified.
The news this winter is full of speculation about how bad our current winter might be. This morning at 5:00 AM, it was -26 at the airport near me which is extremely rare. Guess what, this winter is going to be bad. This year the Great White Owls are now as far south as Jacksonville, Florida and are being seen all around Ohio. It is more amazing this time because it is not because of global cooling but global warming! It matters not what man thinks, these owls are led by the Lord.
This got me thinking about who really has the bird brain when someone uses this term to belittle someone. In more and more cases, it is us Christians who are being belittled for our beliefs. People like us doubt the Lord has lost control of the climate and do not think it is now man who controls it! So let us consider the intelligence of birds and even butterflies being led by the Great Governor, Jesus Christ, who cares deeply for his creation versus man’s refusal to acknowledge Christ’s Sovereignty.
Birds have the good sense to follow the Lord’s leading and man often does not. When we consider the Monarch butterfly this idea gets even more thought provoking. Monarchs born in a mountain area of Mexico, migrate as far north as Maine where their parents came from and die after laying eggs. The next year, those Monarchs born in Maine, migrate back to the same area in Mexico that their parents were born in. We must therefore conclude that even Monarch butterflies follow the Lord’s leading when man often does not.
Scientists have been trying to determine how animals know they need to migrate to even a new area or just get out of the way of a tsunami or some other disaster. For instance, in the days before Mount Saint Helens blew up, the elk herds moved out of the way. We Christians know the Lord leads animals because of what it states in the Bible. Let us look at some scripture:
1. It was the Lord that led pairs of animals to Noah: Genesis 6:19-20: And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.
2. After telling how the swarms of nature are God’s in Psalm 104:24-26, verses 27-30 tell us how they all look to the Lord:
27 They all wait for You
To give them their food in due season.
28 You give to them, they gather it up;
You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
29 You hide Your face, they are dismayed;
You take away their spirit, they expire
And return to their dust.
30 You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground
.
There is much more scripture as in Psalm 145 and in Job, where the Lord talks about his creation in loving ways. The Bible tells us God is love and also tells us how the Lord rewards those of his creation who follow him. For instance in the first 14 verses of Deuteronomy 28, the Lord promises that he will do everything for and bless those nations who follow Him in every way and this came true for America at our founding. A sign of intelligence is following the Lord’s lead.
Let us consider some Biblical absolutes. Man does not control or determine the weather for the earth by following man made rules. Man’s rebellious nature can cause the Lord to bring bad weather. Man’s submission to the Lord’s leading can bring blessings in weather. Note that in both instances, the Lord controls the weather. So while man cannot control the weather, man does have something to do with the weather in that the Lord determines whether man deserves good or bad weather.
It is tragic that so much of America’s leadership no longer looks to the Lord for leadership like the animals do!
