Psalm 145:3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. Christian, do not let that be a stop sign for you. The fact you cannot understand and know everything the Lord has done should not stop us from pondering the unfathomable. As David, who wrote this great Psalm said a little later in verse 5 I will meditate on your wonderful works. This pondering the unfathomable can be a place of wonderful worship. When I learned to think about these things in the night as David did, I started to receive so many wonderful insights that I labored for years writing my book. What follows came to me early in the morning.
Please consider Psalm 119. It has 176 verses, which I am convinced must have been written by David, pondering the statutes, precepts, commands, decrees, and the great riches of God’s laws. After reading and meditating on 9 chapters of the Bible a day in the Bible for 26 years and slowing down just a little in the 7 years since retirement while writing, this long Psalm has become one of my favorites.
Could David’s Psalm 139:15 I was woven together in the depths of the earth, and Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, possibly mean the Lord knew us in the atoms that became our bodies? One morning years ago, in our 6:00 AM men’s Bible study, the pastor asked what does it mean when it states that our bodies will return to the ground (Genesis 3:19). I answered it means when our bodies decay; what our body is made of will become part of the ground again. The Holy Spirit then quickly directed me to Peter and I knew he meant 2 Peter 3:5 because I had pondered this: But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. The Holy Spirit then gave me and there in the mist you were! This is such an awesome thought I have pondered it and enjoyed it for years.
Since pondering the unfathomable things of Christ is praise and worship, why not go further. After a Christian friend asked me if I had ever considered Christ as the strong force in the atom I started to ponder the atom in the grand scheme of Jesus Christ, The Great Governor and Creator of The Universe. Note how after David said I was woven together in the depths of the earth he said Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Revelation 17:8 tells us the Book of Life was written before the foundation of the world! Since nothing came into being apart from Christ and since he hold alls all things together (Colossians 1:15-19) and since he knew us before creation and wrote everyone’s* names in the Book of Life and before we had one day, did he see us in the atoms we were made from? * The Bible tells how the names of the rebellious will be blotted from the book of life.
How about this; in Deuteronomy 28’s first fourteen verses, the Lord, speaking thru Moses promises that a nation that follows his ways will become a top nation, never at the bottom with no one over it as the Lord was making a covenant with the tiny nation of Israel. In the next fifty four verses, the Lord tells of all the curses that will come to the nation that turns from him. Could it be that this promise is for all nations? Wasn’t America a top nation? Why do Christians readily believe 2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land is meant for us but may question that other promises spoken to Israel could be true for us when Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:1-6 and 11 teaches everything that happened to Israel was meant to teach us who follow?
Here is something that will test us. In Deuteronomy 29, Moses tells how all of Israel is there to make the covenant in verses 10-12 “You stand today, all of you, before the LORD your God: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, 12 that you may enter into the covenant with the LORD your God and then in verse 14 and 15 it states “Now not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath, 15 but both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not with us here today. I agree that the logical conclusion is that the covenant is also for the Israelites that were not there but since we cannot fathom all that Christ has done as the Governor of the Universe, can you say with confidence it was not meant for all people in all nations?
Could it be that Christ also meant the promises in this covenant for a nation like America? Could it be that when Abraham was told that he would be the start of a blessing for all nations that it included America? Could it be that when Israel fell that The Great Governor of the Universe took a look down the path of history and saw all those Christians headed for America and set out to bless them and make them a top nation? Will you allow me to suggest that Christ could do nothing less for his people meeting the criteria of a top nation which was following him because of this promise in Jeremiah 1:12 Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.
In the late 1300’s, Wycliffe finished interpreting the Latin Vulgate into the first English Bible and he wrote in the flyleaf of that bible these immortal words, this Bible is translated and will make possible government by people for people! About one hundred years later, in his own words, Columbus sailed into the unknown to find a people as yet unknown to evangelize. The Pilgrims said they came for the same reason. Please understand this, the first attempt at anything resembling a federal government was when the New England Pilgrims, Puritans, Baptist and others came together to form a loose confederation, their document said that whereas they all came to these parts for the same ends and reason, to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
The harder I work at trying to bring America to repentance and revival as I point out what is bringing America down, the more my heart goes out to those in error.
I have been so blessed because I ponder the unfathomable things of Christ, may you do the same. Psalm 104:27 tells us all the animals: —all wait for You, to give them their food in due season. Isn’t it incredible that dumb animals have a grip on Christ’s sovereignty while many humans don’t have a clue!
